Freedom To Worship One Church On a Journey Terry Stafford Books
Great read about one church's journey. Legalism is prominent in too many churches. It's isn't new either. Jesus battled the religious legalists of His day, as did His disciples after Him. This book chronicles one church's journey as it progressed through a change that has torn many churches apart. If you stuck in a legalistic situation, I believe this book will help you along your journey.Product details

Freedom To Worship One Church On a Journey Terry Stafford Books Reviews
I really enjoyed this book. Balanced the personal and academic aspects of breaking away from legalism very well. At it's core, this book is about courage and conviction.
Liked the history at beginning and story revealing struggles. A little one sided and repetitive yet relevant and necessary recommended
I really enjoyed the background research provided concerning the struggles of other organized religions through the ages as compared to the trials of Christ Central through its growth out of the mainline Churches of Christ. A well written documentary that is highly recommended reading.
Wow--what an inspirational retelling of all that God does and can do with people who just want to follow Him. Well-written, easy read; challenging. What a blessing!
I purchased this book and read it in one day. My husband and I were part of this congregation for almost 3 years during the early stages of the journey covered in this book. I was quite interested to see the "rest of the story," as we moved away before some of the bigger changes. There is a lot to be said of a journey of a legalistic church choosing to follow God through the growing pains to freedom, and Terry boils it down to a very concise narrative.
What he does not mention, however, is the absolute love and warmth that this church has. I have never seen a group of Christians who could discuss such difficult topics, everyone strongly state their opinions and their convictions, yet when the closing prayer was said, members of opposing sides could still embrace and grab some ice cream together. I believe this foundation is what made their journey successful. They had an undertone of love and respect at all times, even when they disagreed to the point of moving to another congregation. This church, though we were only there a short time, holds a very special place in my heart and was a defining moment in my personal walk with God.
I believe this book will cause the readers to examine the WHYs of their church's traditions. Examine, question everything. If you end up at the same place you started, that's fine, but at least you KNOW why, not just because it has been handed down to you. But God rarely lets us remain in our comfort zone.
This is the exact message I needed, exactly when I needed it. It speaks to issues our congregation are currently facing, as well as issues that Churches of Christ -- and the Church universal -- must address swiftly and thoroughly if we are to be called the Body of Christ. May God bless our brother Terry and the family at Central for their Kingdom hearts!
After reading this book I have a better understanding of the simplicity of worshipping God. I attend a Church of Christ, mostly because my wife grew up attending churches of Christ. I never knew people sang songs of praise without musical instruments until I attended a church of Christ with my new bride. I would love to see our church move forward with musical instruments but I doubt this will ever happen. I hang on to the hope God promises me, I love God with all my heart, soul, and strength and I love the people around me with the love of Christ. Thank you Terry Stafford for all the great information written in this book. It was a very good read that I will recommend to my friends.
